Add East African Élan to Your Summer Schedule

Kikoy at the beach

Now that you have all your gear safely stowed in a handcrafted Banana Fiber Tote from Harkiss Designs, you’re ready to spruce yourself up before heading for the nearest beach or park.

One of the first things you would notice if you were heading to a South African strand is the bright Kikoy beachwear that both men and women are wearing. Kikoy fabric is a signature Ugandan material once worn by royalty. The Kikoy scarves and fabric in the Harkiss Designs collection feature vibrant color combinations and fringed ends. It is woven from fine cotton grown in Ugandan soil.

You can wear your Kikoy slung around your hips and tied into a sarong, which is an ideal cover-up for your swimsuit. We offer the fabric in 1.2 x 2.7 meter pieces that are plenty roomy for this purpose. You’ll love the colors, put together to suit an East African aesthetic. Choose from purple multi, green multi, cobalt blue or the classic Kikoy palette. When you get ready to test the waters, simply spread your sarong out on the sand to use as a sun-tanning mat when you return.

When the temperature rises on a hot seaside afternoon, put your hair up in one of our Kikoy scarves. Somewhat smaller than our fabric pieces but still ample as a trendy turban or mini-sarong, they come in rose pink, red or black color combinations. Simply fold the scarf in half lengthwise, and place the center against the back of your head. Bring the ends around in front, and twist them at your forehead before wrapping them again to the back. Tie a knot at the back of your head and tuck the ends into the turban.

You’re all set for fun in the sun. Be sure to slip on a pair of our handcrafted leather sandals to protect your tender soles from the hot sand!
